Saturday, October 1st we got our 2011 babies weaned. I knew we had a colorful year but you have all 7 of them together, wow! Anyway, here are just a couple pictures from that day. They are not as wild as they look, these pictures were taken within a half hour of taking them away from home.

Here are just a couple of new images of our stallion Watch Joe Shaq. Our family has had "Shaq" since 2003 when he was a yearling. Dad and Mom bought him from Kent Schroeder (no relation:) of Odebolt. "Shaq" has been our only stallion that we have had since we started with our herd of registered quarter horses in the early 2000's.

This past Pitzer Ranch Fall Sale had a full brother to Shaq consigned. If you have the catalog, he was #411. Watchfancyjoejack is a 2003 red dun gelding that had been used for all aspects of ranching and was sold for over $11,000 (info from Pitzer Ranch Fall Sale 2011).

Anyway, back to our Shaq, he is out of Watch Joe Jack Bars and Sue Fancy. I still don't know how to format my blog so I can do Shaqs pedigree but on the top of his papers it goes Watch Joe Shaq--Watch Joe Jack Bars--Watch Joe Jack--Two Eyed Jack. On the actual AQHA papers of Shaq's babies, it goes upto Watch Joe Jack

Here are just a few new pictures from last saturday of Shaq and Smokey's sweet little filly. She definitely is built and she has a very easy disposition to boot. She is certainly going to be one you would like to show off. Our stallion Watch Joe Shaq is 15.2 hands and mare SRB Go Smokey Roann is 15 hands so this little one is not going to stay little for long. We have her registration application for the American Quarter Horse Association but have not filled it out yet.

It has been so hot this summer and our creek has been so wet that it is hard to get many decent pictures of the babies without them being so dirty. If you are part of this heatwave, stay cool!

I am not sure how to get the names by the pictures the best, the colts that are the trickiest to figure out are our two red dun fillies, Smokey's and Cane's. Smokey's baby has the bigger blaze of the two. These are still pictures from this past Monday, I hope I don't have any repeats.

OK this is it for older pictures, I just got to thinking that if anyone is new to our blog that I should explain some of our bloodlines.

Our stallion Watch Joe Shaq ( a red dun that carries and expresses the roan gene) is out of Watch Joe Jack Bars and Sue Fancy, he is a grandson of Watch Joe Jack and Elano.

Five of our mares, Syd(bay), Cane(sorrel), Drifter(sorrel), Royal(sorrel), and Smokey(sorrel) are all half sisters out of the stud Sneaky Red Baron who is out of Mr Baron Red and Sneaky Feast. Drifter and Royal are full sisters.

These 6 are the original group that dad and mom bought between 2001 to 2003 starting with Syd when she was 3 (in 2001) through Shaq when he was just a funny looking yearling (in 2003). We have pretty much watched them grow right in front of our eyes.

Pretty Girl is a 12 year old buckskin out of Gabbys Watch and Swendoll Dandy. Gabbys Watch is out of Caballero Mujer and Watch Sandy Joe, Watch Sandy Joe is out of Watch Joe Jack and Sandy Ridge.

Lena is the newest addition to our herd, we got her a few years back, she is a 16 year old bay out of Ima Peppy San and Christian Olena. Ima Peppy San is out of Little Peppy Four who is out of Peppy San Badger and La Quinta.

Where in the world has this summer gone? I am so far behind with my pictures! This is just a mixture of pictures that I took even before Pretty Girl and Cane had their 2011 babies. I have quite a few so I may end up with a lot of new post tonight, it is already almost midnight so I hope I can stay up long enough to get them on here. Besides these old shots I have more that I took two nights ago that I want to get on here too. We shall see, hope you enjoy. It has been another great year for color, build, and dispositions in our Windy Creek babies.

His legs have quite a bit of white hairs on them already, give him a month or two and you won't recognize him. The day when I was taking his pictures on top I could hardly get them taken because he wanted so much attention! He is such a little sweetheart!

My nephew Caleb's filly Midnite gave us a first, a palomino! Last year she had a buckskin but I never would have thought something this light could come from a black mare and our red roan/dun stallion! She is one sharp little filly born on April 12th, our Grandmas 90th birthday!

I know I am doing a lot of catching up on one day but I can't seem to keep up with everything:) Just a few days after Midnite had her baby girl, our bay mare Lena had a bay/bay roan stud colt on friday the 15th but I haven't got pictures of him yet, be patient they will come.

Not to be outdone by Drifter, our mare Royal gave us one great looking stud colt too! He looks to be a red roan, for the time being anyway (ha ha). He was born April 8th. This is going to be an interesting year for registration paper again if this keeps up! Two colts and two different colors!

Thursday, April 7th Drifter started things off with a bang with having an awesome little stud colt. As with a lot of the colts that have been out of our mares and our stallion Shaq, the color of this one is up in the air,it looks like another combination of red roan/dun. Either way he is a sharp looking addition to our pasture!

These pictures were taken yesterday, 7-6-10. Midnite's little buckskin is down by Caleb so I didn't get a new picture of him but I did of the four little ones at our place. They are all looking good, we have a red dun, bay, and 2 red roans. We are going to try and get the registration papers done shortly and go from there about trying to find a good outlet for selling them. Anyway, can not believe that it has been since june from my last entry. When I take pictures to send with papers I get more on here too. The mares and Shaq are really lookin good too, they are really striking in our late summer sunsets.

Here are just a mixture of pictures I took today. The older colts are really filling out, they look huge next to the two little ones! Pretty Girls' little guy looks like he has two black eyes, from the way he is shedding around his eyes. They might not be very clear, it was getting kind of dark/stormy out this morning when I was trying to get some new pictures of them. This has been one colorful year for babies, 5 babies and 5 different colors! Registering should be fun, all I know is that the AQHA are going to get a bunch of pictures in with registration forms this year! Since I gave up on this slow computer on friday, this past sunday morning, Cane had a great looking red dun (I think it will stay this color) filly but haven't had chance to picture of her yet. I will get them on as soon as I can.

Syd is finally not the last mare to foal. This past Tuesday (6-15) Syd had a gorgeous bay roan! We think that is the color, it looks like a bay but then when you see him walk, the inside of his legs are very light colored.

Ezra was the first to spot the baby, he was going out to check on the herd when he came across Syd having her colt!

This morning when I was out taking pictures he was literally running circles around Syd, he must be doing alright!

Smokey's Baby Girl!

Last Saturday, June 12th, Smokey had a beautiful little girl. It looks to be a red roan, but as always with most of our babies, summer will tell! Right now she looks like a little appaloosa with her front end being sorrel colored and her back end roan! OOPS! They are both looking great though.

It has been so muddy here and the herd seems to like to hang out by the creek that I didn't get any pictures until this morning (6-18).

If it is possible, I think we now have mud on mud in the top pasture by the house. Remember, if one of the Windy Creek babies catches your eye, keep us in mind in another 2-3 months when it comes weaning time , hint-hint!

Another addition has come to Windy Creek since I have last been able to get out and get pictures, Pretty Girl has had a gorgeous little stud colt. We are not sure what color he is going to be, she never has the same color colts it seems. The insides of his legs seem lighter, so we shall wait and see!

We are still waiting on Smokey, Cane, and Syd for their babies. It doesn't look like Lena is going to have one this year.

I snapped these pictures little over week ago of our stallion Watch Joe Shaq. He seems to get more show stopping each year! You can definitely see his roan gene coming through in the summertime.

And also I am getting back on my feet from being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was in the hospital from Monday May 3rd until Friday the 7th. It has been a very slow recovery, but everyday is better.

Since I have been on here, we now have only the 2 two year old fillies left for purchase and now our new 2010 additions.

Last Friday night, April 16th, Drifter had a beautiful little filly (pictured here)! I know these pictures aren't the best but I also know that I have never had just two pictures of any of our Windy Creek baby and then be done with it. There will be plenty more pictures in the weeks and months ahead.

On a sad note last Wednesday, April 14th Royal had a pretty red roan baby but before the next morning it had passed away. Royal seems to doing fine so we are not sure what was wrong with her baby.

We still are not 100% sure what color he is going to be!

We have a couple mares getting pretty close but there are still a couple that have a way to go.

I can't get same day pictures on here, I hardly ever have and probably never will. Because I use my sister Cindy's computer and camera (and a busy life) it so it's not easy for me to do.This is the only way that I can do my blog.

Tuesday, April 13th my nephew Caleb's mare Gabbys Midnite Watch (and Shaq) had her first ever colt (a sharp little stud colt!). He is our first colt this spring!

Once again it has the color that we are not sure what it is going to turn out to be. He has looked like a gray, a roan, and a buckskin in it's first three days of life so far, we will have to wait and see what he will actually turn out to be.

Midnite and baby are both looking good.

A side note about the last post - if there is room in a family friends trailer, we will be selling our two year olds at the Corsica, SD horse sale this coming Monday.

We currently have 3 two year olds (red dun stallion "Shaqs Royal Dandy", red dun filly "Lovely Lady In Red, sorrel filly "Watch Elsies Lady") and 2 yearlings both red dun stallions "Stormy Red Cane" and "Shaqs Proud Rebel" for sale. Their dispositions are good and they are all put together very nicely. We want to raise the kind of horse that anyone would enjoy to have and would be comfortable being around them. The two year olds are all really nice sized already so it won't be too long before they can get started. They haven't had a whole lot done with any of them but they are super easy to be around. When you are by them it is like walking into a pen of puppies, they all want your attention.

Our stallion Watch Joe Shaq, who is pictured throughout the blog, is out of Watch Joe Jack Bars who is a son of Watch Joe Jack and our five main mares, the ones whose babies are for sale right now, are all 1/2 sisters out of Sneaky Red Baron who is a son of Mr Baron Red. The papers on the colts we raise still include Watch Joe Jack on the top and Mr Baron Red on the bottom. Watch Joe Jack is featured in the latest Western Horseman "Legends" book. The colts pictured above are the 2 yearlings, "Stormy Red Cane" facing the camera born June of 2009. He is out of "Shaq" and our mare "SRB Can Cane." And "Shaqs Proud Rebel" out of "Shaq" and "SRB Country Drifter" born April 2009. These pictures were taken last fall before weaning. We have newer pictures but their winter coat is distracting. I will try and get pictures of the two year olds so you can what we got.

This is the kind of crazy winter we have been facing for weeks! If you look close in the second picture you can see the tops of Shaq and the mares. It is going to be fun to see all of our stretched out barbed wire fences in the spring once the snow is finally off! These pictures were taken the middle of Jan. Today again we have more blowing snow and drifting and another inch or two in forecast.

In the two pictures here at the end, Shaqs Proud Rebel and Watch John Three 16 are walking from the trailer into their new yard. I was so pleased at how slick it went bringing the littlest ones into the yard. I know that the last two post have already been pictures from 11-29 but I still had some more to share. These are just some general ones. Most all of the ones pictured are for sale. The only ones not for sale are Fancy and Lucky, the big red dun and the big sorrel.

Here are a few pictures of our 2009 colt crop. These pictures were taken on 10-17 after we got them weaned and down the road to Dan's place. After we got the gate shut behind Dan and made sure the mares were ok, we headed down to his place to help get the little ones off the trailer but when we pulled in the weanlings were already in the round pen! It looks pretty neat when you drive by and see all the colors in the yard, we have red roan, red duns, buckskin, and we still haven't decided the color of Lena's! We have the registration papers sent off on Cane, Drifter, Royal, and Smokey's babies but we haven't got them back yet.

Saturday, October 17th, we got the 2009 babies weaned. It went so fast that I didn't get many pictures, well that and the fact that it was a muddy mess that I just stayed by the gate! Here are some of the mares and Shaq (behind Cane by the pickup/trailer). The ones pictured here are Royal, Smokey, Cane, and Shaq. Everyone of them young and old look pretty scruffy thanks to our muddy conditions and getting ready for winter.

The other day I tried to get some new pictures of our young horses - weanlings and up but the sloppy conditions prevented me from getting more than I did. It has been pretty wet here lately, yesterday when I opened the gates for my brother Dan to bring bales for the two yards I thought I was going to walk out of my boots! Other than the mud on them though. they are all doing great and looking good. Just a reminder, the weanlings, yearlings, and our two year old gelding Twister are still for sale, $3oo each, your choice. Wow, the summer has gone by so quickly! The colts are all doing great and looking awesome. As it usually happens, most of the babies have changed colors since birth. We have four red roans, two red duns, and a buckskin! They are a sight to see. There are more than one picture of a couple of them and not a picture yet for Syd's filly or Pretty Girls buckskin yet, be sure to check back.

Syd finally decided to have her baby, it was well worth the wait. It is a beautiful red roan. Some of our other babies from this year are now starting to show some roan but this little thing already is! It was born Monday morning and everything is looking good, these pictures were taken that afternoon.

Yesterday (June 10th) we were excited to find that Cane had her baby. He is a healthy, flashy, and big stud colt with the most white on his legs that any baby born here has had! We are still anxiously waiting on Syd, then we will have all our '09 babies on the ground.

These are the new pictures of Lovely Lady In Red, our red dun yearling filly. She is not as slicked up as her older siblings, all our yearlings are about in the same boat for scruffy coats yet. In one of the pictures she is by her full sister "Fancy" also a red dun.

Thurday, May 7th "Lena" had a little stud colt. This is the first baby out of our Stallion Watch Joe Shaq and "Lena". We were all so anxious to see what this combination would give us, from the looks of this little guy it is a good combination!

On Wednesday night, the 22nd, Drifter had an awesome little stud colt. This is the first time that she didn't have a sorrel or chestnut. We are anxious to see if this baby will roan out or not, it looks like it could. These pictures were taken last night, (4-23).

On Sunday April 19th "Pretty Girl" had a beautiful buckskin stud colt. He is really looking good. We went out on Sunday with our regular 35mm camera but last night (4-23) I went and got some on a digital camera so I could get some on the blog faster. It was sunset so they are kind of grainy. When I went out this afternoon to check on them I was able to get some more.

Last week I was able to get out and snap a few pictures of our "little ones." Aside from their winter coats, they are really filling out nice. I can not believe that it has been over a month since the last entry! This new year is going extremely fast. In a couple months we will be welcoming a whole new crop of babies from Shaq and our mares! I took some pictures last Friday of Shaq and some of the mares, I didn't get one of each of them yet, but I hope to soon. Shaq is in the pictures on top then the it goes; Cane, Drifter and Syd together, and then Royal. This is just a refresher of the 3 Two year olds that are for sale from Windy Creek QH. The pictures are from all different times but just to show who they are. It is going to take some getting used to moving them all up a year. Our weanlings are now yearlings and our yearlings are now two year olds! The weather has not been the best to keep up on pictures, sorry. My brother and his kids have been braving our Iowa winter though and have started to work with our two year olds. It sounds like things are going pretty good. They are the yearlings from last years posts. The red roan stallion and the dun stallion and then the gray quarter horse/mustang filly. We hope to get some horses moved around before long so we can prepare for the new crop coming in just a few months.

This is our bay roan out of Shaq and our mare SRB Jazzy Lady. His full brother is the dun stallion from 2007. This tough guy was born the last half of May this year and has turned heads ever since. The camera loves him! The registration application has been sent off so before long he will officially be registered. He was awesome looking when we didn't know what color he was going to turn out to be and then by the end of summer he had roaned out!

Dandy was born on April 23, 2008. He is a red dun stallion out of our stud Watch Joe Shaq and our mare SRB Royal Drifter (She is the dam to the red roan filly from last year). I know that I already did a spotlight on Smokey's little sorrel, but she is just too sweet not to take another look at. Both fillies were born in May of this year. The red dun filly is out of Cane, the dam to the red roan stallion from 2007 (that has been in a couple of entries already) and to Fancy, the three year old that my nephew trained this summer (look at the Aug. entries).

The 2008 colts are weaned (since september 27th) and adjusting really well. We have the registration applications but do not have them all filled out. The dna kits have already been done for most our mares and Shaq so the applications are good to go whenever they get done. Our first colt this year was born on April 23rd so we have a little over a month to get it sent off to meet the 7 month deadline before the price goes up.

The mares are still looking good too. There a couple mare pictures on here too, from the morning when they were getting separated.

The other night I was wanting to get some more picutes of the 2008 babies by their moms before we wean them. It was too wet to get in the pasture so some I took from the road and them later when they came up to drink. Everyone was looking so good that I got so distracted watching them that I almost forgot to take pictures. Shaq and the mares were looking so sharp and boy did the babies look nice in the sunset! . The are not the clearest but the general idea is there.

The 2008 babies are also for sale, they are really looking great right now and will be ready to wean at the end of the month. The yearling stallions have been spotlighted on their own blog entry earlier this year. The mustang/qh hasn't been spotlighted by herself on the blog but she is out of our stud Shaq and our mustang Sally. This is the first baby born out of our stud Watch Joe Shaq in 2005, my sister Cindy bought her from dad and mom. Fancy is out of SRB Can Cane and is a full sister to the red roan yearling stallion.

My nephew Malachi has been working with her this summer and training her. It is pretty neat to watch Fancy and Malachi in action! I took these pictures last night so that we could show an example of the windy creek quality.

Just a note, Fancy is NOT for sale, we are just showing her progress as a three year old.

We have had 3 stud colts and 2 fillies and my brothers' mare had the stud colt on the left. They are all looking good and really starting to fill out nice. Cane is the last mare that we are waiting on. Be sure to check back to see more pictures of all our little ones as they continue to grow.

Shaq of Diamons, "Jack," is the fourth yearling that we have for sale. Jack is registered as a dun stallion. He was born on June 19th of 2007 out of our stallion Shaq and our mare SRB Jazzy Lady. He is kind and sensible. His mom has done very well on trails so Jack may take her lead and be the same way.

Bell is another yearling born here at Windy Creek. She was born on April 26, 2007. Her mom and Beauty's mom are full sisters. Bell is out of Watch Joe Shaq and SRB Country Drifter. Her name was suppose to be Shaqs Driftwood Bell but I guess my q looked too much like a z when we were filling out her registration papers. Bell has Watch Joe Jack and Mr Baron Red and also Driftwood Hank still on her papers. She is very sweet and smart. Great potential!

"Beauty" is one of the Windy Creek yearlings. She was born May 9th of last year out of our stud Shaq and our mare SRB "Royal" Drifter. She is a red roan filly with no markings. Beauty is a sweetheart of a horse. She is usually the first one to come to the gate when you call. I think her name says it all, she is indeed a beauty!

Cane is seven years old and has a three for three colt record since Shaq and the mares have been old enough. So far she has had red duns and roans. I can't wait to see what she will be having this year.

To us all our mares are beautiful but there is just something about Cane that sets her apart from all the rest. It is like when you see pictures of what the ideal American Quarter horse is suppose to be like. Her babies are always just as awesome. Spring Is On It's Way

This picture doesn't look much like spring but I wanted to use it before summertime when it would really be far off. It is of our yearlings, I know it is hard to see them but you get the idea. Today is suppose to be in the upper 50's so at least for a little while it is going to feel like spring.

Our Mares are all looking good. Drifter was the first to have her colt last year and I think this year she may have a run for her money to keep that honor. By the way it looks we should be five for five again this year. We are anxious to see what Lena, mom's new mare, will have this year hopefully making it six for six. Make sure to start checking back in a month or so to see the additions to Windy Creek.

Shaq is a red dun stallion that is six years old. He is registered as a red dun that carries and expresses the roan gene. When dad bought him as a yearling I wondered why dad would get such a funny colored horse but dad knew what he was doing. Shaq has grown into a beautiful stud with a great disposition. He is easy to catch and able to walk up to in the pasture.We couldn't ask for a better stallion for our farm. He is usually pastured year around with the mares but this past fall he went to Cunningham Quarter Horses in Laurel, Nebraska for some training. Now Shaq is at my brothers place to get some more ride time on.

How it got started

We are located in northwest Iowa and have only been AQHA members for a few years. I can't remember a time when there has not been a horse on our farm. I realized that I didn't take much time to explain about how we got started. My dad always had a love of horses, from childhood on. He passed that love onto his wife and six kids and further on to his daughters-in-law and son-in-law and grandchildren. It was his and moms dream to raise quarter horses when they had retired from farming. Dad bought the five mares that we started with a few years ago when they were yearlings and two year old, now they are from six to ten years old. This past Fall mom bought a sixth mare to add to our herd. Our stallion was bought by dad when it was a yearling as well and is now six years old. It has been rewarding to watch our horses grow. Some may wonder why we are so excited about such a small herd but it is a family dream that takes on more meaning every year. If cancer were not so cruel Dad would still be here and anxious to see the new crop of colts coming. Mom has kept the horses because of the dream her and dad shared and that they instilled into their children. We look forward to seeing many more colts be born at Windy Creek for years to come.

Windy Creek Quarter Horses is a family operation focusing on raising quality quarter horses that everyone can enjoy. We are getting close to our fourth colt crop coming this spring. At this time we have six quarter horse mares and one stallion. Five of the mares are half sisters with bloodlines going back to Mr Baron Red on the sire side and on the dam sides including some Driftwood Salina, Can Spicuous, and Smokey Shortcake just to name some. Our stallion has Watch Joe Jack on the sire side and Fancy Red Bar Boy on the dams. Right now we have four yearlings for sale; a red roan filly, chestnut filly, dun stallion, and a red roan stallion.
